UPF16 is a new passion fruit variety which drought tolerant and is suited both for processing and the fresh market. It is superior in quality, and thrives very well in Dry or Semi Arid Regions e.g. Nakasongola. The trial planting was done in Nakasongola in mid 2016, and by September 2016, it had fully matured, and was flourishing in the midst of the June-September dry season without any irrigation. The UPF16 variety is resistant to diseases, with a high yield for juice, long shelf life, and a very nice aroma. The UPF16 will be rolled out this year in Partnership with Ministry of Agriculture. The UPF16 can do very well in areas that receive low rainfall e.g. Northern Uganda, Eastern Uganda, areas of Nakaseke, Nakasongola, and Luwero.
